TEC Video Embraces High Definition Technology
Sharper pictures, superior sound quality and the ability to
view on ever larger screens are some of the qualities driving
the growth in the worldwide High Definition (HD) market. Whether
2008 is the breakthrough year in South Africa, or whether we’ll
have to wait a bit longer, it seems as if HDTV is here to stay.
Viewers around the world with the required technology can
look forward to watching the 2010 World Cup broadcast in high
definition from 25 different camera angles and using 5.1 surround
sound.
Having prevailed in their battle with Toshiba, Sony’s
“Blue-Ray” is now the accepted next generation HD
Optical Disc. 2007 saw 31,000 titles shipped to South Africa
with that figure predicted to rise this year.
For many companies, the prospect of getting their message across
in definition nearly five times as sharp as conventional videos
is exciting. TEC Video uses state-of-the-art technology and
is able to develop, direct and produce powerful corporate and
commercial videos in High Definition.
Says Candice Ashwin, head of TEC Video, “We’re
energized by the rapid development of technology and the opportunity
to use this technology to produce the highest quality work.”

Sub urban’s continued success into 2008
Sub urban’s success of 2007 has continued into 2008,
resulting in all of its in-house directors shooting simultaneously.
Director/Cinematographer Miles Goodall is just one of the
busy directors. He was recently in Cape Town to shoot the
latest Seat commercial with Mark Fisher of BAM (Brands All
Mighty), the newly launched independent unit within the Ogilvy
stable. This is the second of the Seat commercials Miles is
shooting for BAM, adding to the other 30 car commercials already
under his creative belt.
In addition, Cheill Communications Johannesburg selected
Miles to shoot a Samsung commercial, which will launch the
latest handset – the F250.
Mukunda, who has the ability to balance performance and style,
has just completed the humorous MTN “Fingers”
campaign with MetropolitanRepublic. The 15 commercials in
this campaign were shot in one day.
Ian Mason is our classical filmmaker who has, once again
collaborated with Leo Burnett Johannesburg to shoot a fifth
and sixth McDonald’s commercial with them.
Sheilla Kubheka, Sub urban’s youngest Director, has
been entrusted by Network BBDO Cape Town to direct Ackerman’s
“Cords”.
In amongst all of this activity, the Sub urban team is expanding
with the addition of two international directors; Matt Helfgott
and Nadia De Paoli. Watch this space for an announcement on
the new talent.

Raw imagery used in aides commercial
A crying toddler struggles to get up to walk. Each time he
gets onto his feet, he loses his balance and falls onto the
stony, dry desert sand, making him cry even harder. Designed
to demonstrate the severity of HIV/Aids, this commercial imagery
depicts a distraught baby left alone with no one to take care
of him - no one to pick him up and no one to comfort him.
Shot and directed by Miles Goodall in Namibia for TBWA Paris
through Hamster Publicité, the spot has a powerful message
to communicate. It’s a raw approach set in harsh conditions
that will draw on viewer’s emotions, making them feel
somewhat uncomfortable. In order to convey this tone, the spot
could not be too crafted or edited. It’s not a pleasant
reality and therefore cannot look refined and manicured.
