SHEILLA KUBHEKA BOLSTERS SHOWREEL
In addition to her natural ability to connect with her audience
on a personal level, Sheilla Kubheka's overwhelming presence
as a strong, talented, female director in South Africa made
her the most prominent choice to direct the new Radox TV spot
for TBWA/Hunt/Lascaris, Durban. Aimed at supporting a woman's
much deserved need for relaxation and rejuvenation in the world
we live in, the ad literally drew life from Sheilla's abundance
of feminine energy.
"To set the mood of the ad, I wanted to transport the
viewers to a serene, dream-like place. To do that, a three and
a half hour drive to the Lindberg Lodge to capture the perfect
sunset followed, only to be welcomed by heavy rain almost as
persistent as myself and my crew. It was quite profound when
nature let up only for an instant to give us a short window
to capture the perfect shot for the spot," says Sheilla.
Sheilla's vision to illustrate the brand's natural, warm and
uniquely feminine values was greatly complemented by Agency
Creative Director, Roy Peacock and Producer, Sheridan de Beer.
"Roy was so pleasant to work with," says Sheilla.
"He put full trust in my ability and welcomed all my creative
input. We worked really well together with the support and knowledge
from Sheridan."
A well-selected and professional cast along with the added
visual value contributed by industry respected Director of Photography,
Clive Sacke, Art Director, Lauren Wilensky and Sub urban Producer,
Lauren Trevelyan made the shoot an unparalleled success.

AREA 5.1 LAUNCHES AT V-Lab
Out with the old and in with the new as V-Lab revamps an industry
stalwart into a 21st century powerhouse.
The Old: Chris Fellows Sound Studios (CFSS) located at Sasani
Studios.
The New: AREA 5.1 located at ETV’s new television hub.
A true Dolby feature studio with the legal 5.1 size and correct
Dolby certification that housed the talents of the late Jeremy
Saacks, AREA 5.1 is part of the revamp happening in the Balfour
Park area as ETV takes over the Sasani Studios and turns this
into a dynamic new environment for the television and film
industry.
Charlotte Buys had worked closely with Jeremy for the last
four years and now steps into the spotlight at AREA 5.1 as
head sound engineer and ADR engineer and editor. Bookings
will be handled through V-Lab.
“AREA 5.1 will continue their sterling work on feature
films,” says V-Lab’s General Manager Tracey Williams,
“ But we are also actively branching into television
and corporate work with a specialized ratecard.”
Charlotte, one of a handful of female sound engineers in the
country, will thus oversee the following offerings:
• Feature work – traditional 5.1 Dolby work
• Services – ADR, track lay etc
• Television, doccies and corporate work
“Not enough time is spent laying sound correctly,”
says Charlotte, “Adding layers and complexity to your
sound is what takes your work to the next level, and that
is what AREA 5.1 is about.”
Charlotte’s experience in working on feature films can
now be translated to television, documentary and even corporate
work, “Our quality control process at AREA 5.1 and V-Lab
has seen our feature work meet international distribution
standards everytime – that says a lot about the level
of professionalism and experience we have here. Broadcast
standards are getting higher too and not a lot of sound engineers
understand those standards or have experience with them.”
Some of the work Charlotte has worked on includes Tsotsi,
Oil on Water, Heartline SABC series, Crazy Monkey and Yesterday.
V-Lab feature producer Lauren van Rensburg concurs, “Work
with someone who knows the difference between good sound and
okay sound – don’t rely on your editor to do it
in his or her Final Cut.”
AREA 5.1 is a full production and post production audio facility
offering mixing studios, sound effect libraries, track laying,
sound post, folley and ADR studios with Dolby Digital EX,
Dolby Digital and Dolby SR mixing capabilities for feature
films, commercials and television work.
All final sound mixes and stems can be supplied on multiple
digital formats and Dolby Digital or Dolby SR optical sound
negatives can be shot on the LLK3 digital laser camera at
V-Lab.

GREY HITS HARD
Collection tins – innocuous but also ineffective
– so how do Animals In Distress get consumers to take
note and take action? Enter Grey South Africa who cut to the
chase with their hard-hitting design that not only caught the
public’s attention but more importantly, moved them to
action.
The Grey team used the visual of an abused animal
staring out from behind the perspex of the collection box. ‘Your
donations can help make this disappear’ - a double-edged
message stuck to the front of the box, prompts shoppers to cover
the image with cash donations, and thereby assist with the treatment
and prevention of animal abuse.
The Creative Circle donated all monies from their
December entries to Animals in Distress. The agency won a Creative
Circle award for the outdoor ambient category for this campaign.

CREATIVE VISION AND FNB
GRAFFITI DOWNTOWN JOBURG
Commissioned by ad agency Switch Through the Line, the brief
was to create nine commercials for campus TV. The first five
were funky and memorable ads for FNB student account. We called
in our favourite muso Adam Lomas who not only composed outstanding
beats, but also rewrote the script into hip-hop. It was a
stroke of genius.

TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE
'Taxi to the Dark Side’, a documentary produced
by South African film producer Don Edkins, won the Documentary
Feature Oscar at the 80th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday night.
Directed by Alex Gibney, ‘Taxi to the Dark Side’
tells the story of an Afghan taxi driver tortured to death by
the American government as part of its "War on Terror".
The film was one of 10 films featured in “Why Democracy?”
– a global documentary project coordinated by Edkins from
Steps International’s Cape Town offices.
Speaking of the film’s victory Edkins said “I am
very pleased that ‘Taxi to the Dark Side’ won because
it deals with a very tough political issue. By awarding the
film an Oscar, the Academy has shown it is not scared of films
which expose the undemocratic practices of the American Government.”
